In each of the stories collected in this anthology, it is this light that illuminates the words. Eighteen Tibetans share their personal journeys in exile – of loss, separation and suffering. For many, it is the first time they have done so. Each story tells a segment of the whole and is a common narrative for Tibetans dispersed across the globe. Together, they give voice to the silenced majority in Tibet. They create a web of connection between those inside and those outside. And they remind the reader how Tibet needs our ongoing support and prayers.
Alongside the tragedy, there is cause for optimism. The Tibetan diaspora is finding root in the most unlikely of places. From scratch, Tibetans are building a community in Sydney’s Northern Beaches and keeping alive the traditions and heritage of their ancient culture for future generations. For many, adapting to life here has not been easy. But loss can be transformative and living in Australia offers new opportunities. Above all, freedom.
